چکیده

Predictions from the cable model and equations for field potentials generated by single neurons are computed and compared with extra cellular recordings from synaptically activated cerebellar Purkinje cell dendrites. Neither theory predicts the results, nor does the expermental situation satisfy the assumptions of either theory. Theoretical calculations from a recent formulation developed by Rall compare favorably with potentials recorded by others authors. A pplications of these formulations are discussed.

Dendritic Sodium Spikes Are Variable Triggers of Axonal Action Potentials in Hippocampal CA1 Pyramidal Neurons

Several early studies suggested that spikes can be generated in the dendrites of CA1 pyramidal neurons, but their functional significance and the conditions under which they occur remain poorly understood. Here, we provide direct evidence from simultaneous dendritic and somatic patch-pipette recordings that excitatory synaptic inputs can elicit dendritic sodium spikes prior to axonal action pot...

Submillisecond precision of the input-output transformation function mediated by fast sodium dendritic spikes in basal dendrites of CA1 pyramidal neurons.

The ability of cortical neurons to perform temporally accurate computations has been shown to be important for encoding of information in the cortex; however, cortical neurons are expected to be imprecise temporal encoders because of the stochastic nature of synaptic transmission and ion channel gating, dendritic filtering, and background synaptic noise. Here we show for the first time that fas...

Synaptically evoked dendritic action potentials in rat neocortical pyramidal neurons.

In a previous study iontophoresis of glutamate on the apical dendrite of layer 5 pyramidal neurons from rat neocortex was used to identify sites at which dendritic depolarization evoked small, prolonged Ca2+ spikes and/or low-threshold Na+ spikes recorded by an intracellular microelectrode in the soma. These spikes were identified as originating in the dendrite. Here we evoke similar dendritic ...

Dendritic spikes are enhanced by cooperative network activity in the intact hippocampus.

In vitro experiments suggest that dendritic fast action potentials may influence the efficacy of concurrently active synapses by enhancing Ca2+ influx into the dendrites. However, the exact circumstances leading to these effects in the intact brain are not known. We have addressed these issues by performing intracellular sharp electrode recordings from morphologically identified sites in the ap...

Theta oscillations in somata and dendrites of hippocampal pyramidal cells in vivo: activity-dependent phase-precession of action potentials.

Theta frequency field oscillation reflects synchronized synaptic potentials that entrain the discharge of neuronal populations within the approximately 100-200 ms range. The cellular-synaptic generation of theta activity in the hippocampus was investigated by intracellular recordings from the somata and dendrites of CA1 pyramidal cells in urethane-anesthetized rats. The recorded neurons were ve...
